Winter Tree & Shrub Care Tips

For a Vibrant Spring

While winter is the time of year when plant growth slows, they still need attention. The harsh cold, crippling ice, and smothering snow can all play a part in plant health. Use these winter tree and shrub care tips to help ensure your plants survive the season ready to thrive in the spring.

Winter Tree & Shrub Care Tips

Proper tree and shrub care is essential all year long, even during the dormant season. Regular maintenance promotes plant health which helps provide support through harsh winter conditions. Not only can plants survive the season, but they’re more likely to bounce back vibrantly in the spring. Here’s how to give trees and shrubs the care they deserve.

  1. Prune. Remove any dead or damaged branches. Since most plants are dormant, you can also help reshape the structure by removing crisscrossing branches and overgrown areas. Don’t remove more than a third of the weight. You also don’t want to prune plants that bloom in the spring since they may already have buds.
  2. Mulch. Soil is more likely to become compact when the ground repeatedly freezes and thaws. Add a few inches of mulch around the base of your tree and shrubs to help insulate and regulate soil temperature and moisture levels.
  3. Hydrate. Plants may not need as much water this time of year, but they still needs some. Monitor soil moisture throughout the winter and provide adequate water when necessary.
  4. Remove snow and ice. Relieve branches from the weight of heavy snow and ice before they break. Gently brush the snow off and allow ice to melt instead of trying to break it.
  5. Protect. In addition to icy branches, certain plants are more susceptible to sun scald and hungry wildlife. Help prevent damage by using tree wraps and/or barriers.
  6. Inspect. Without any leaves on the tree and certain shrubs, you get a clear view of the branches. Look out for signs of disease, pests, or structural issues. Treat any problems you find before it spreads or the leaves grow back and makes it less noticeable.
